Relative and absolute ages in the histories of Earth and the Moon: The Geologic Time Scale
A few days ago, I wrote a post about the basins of the Moon -- a result of a trip down a rabbit hole of book research. In the science of geology, there are two main ways we use to describe how old a thing is or how long ago an event took place. There are absolute ages and there are relative ages.
The geologic time scale was initially developed by determining the relative ages of rock units, first in Europe, and then in other parts of the world. Most of this work was done in the s and s. To determine which rock units were older and which ones were younger in a relative sense , geologists devised a number of laws, or principles, to help figure out the sequence of geologic events in a particular locality. In this lab, you will apply many of these laws and principles to determine the relative sequence of geologic events that created a particular set of rock layers and intrusions.
