Nicole Kidman and Clive Owens’ new HBO movie “Hemingway & Gellhorn” may be focused on the famous American author’s relationship with fellow war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, but it spends a good amount of time exploring their life in the bedroom. The movie doesn’t disappoint.

In her later years Martha Gellhorn would entertain her friends - or chums, as she called them - in her London flat overlooking the rooftops of Chelsea. Strict rules were enforced at these gatherings.
While in Spain, they form a relentless love affair born out of danger, mutual respect, admiration and a great deal of horniness that would last for years. It would be somewhat disingenuous to call Kaufman a noted eroticist in his own right out for sexualizing Hemingway and Gellhorn, but the film becomes akin to a ridiculous Red Shoe Diaries episode. They just keep screwing while rubbing plaster all over their bodies. Then again, maybe the film should have stuck with the sexual aspect of their relationship instead, because the rest of the film feels just as tonally awkward. Stahl and Turner cram decades worth of historically cheesy expository dialogue into every sequence. Owen seems sad and just about ready to give up.
Ernest Hemingway endures: his inimitable writing; his dramatic death by self-inflicted gunshot at the relatively young age of 61; his big-game hunting, hard-drinking, macho persona; his four wives. In the case of Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway's third of four wives, that oversight seems particularly egregious. As Kaufman demonstrates, Gellhorn Nicole Kidman was likely Hemingway's Clive Owen most challenging and interesting partner, and the only of his wives to stand up to his unpleasant sadism. Next to her gritty self-reliance, Hemingway's frequent tantrums and fatally fragile ego are brilliantly exposed as the tiresome qualities of an overindulged man-child. Must we? Disdainfully punctuated by the exhale of cigarette smoke, the question is obviously rhetorical.
